Review: Pedco UltraPod II

WHAT?! A $20 that I would recommend!?

If you have read my other tripod review post, you would know that I am not a fan of cheep tripods.

The Pedco UltraPod II however, is a fantastic little tripod.  In the few times that I didn’t want to take my Vauguard Alta Pro because of space or weight (packing light is essential in backcountry backpacking) I used this little guy.

It is worth every penny of that $20 price tag.

Pros:

Small, lightweight, versatile tripod with rubber feet and a Velcro strap for attaching to trees or other small diameter objects.  It is extremely sturdy as well.  The ball head that comes with it handles my D610 and most smaller lenses with ease.

Cons:

Non adjustable feet length make placement tricky on varied surfaces. The mounting head is rated for 6 lbs but I really wouldn’t trust more than 3.5 lbs on there because of the stability.  Also, because of the non adjustable legs for height, you are stuck with a really low angle shot if you are shooting off the ground.  The ball mount can get a little finicky at times when trying to adjust with your camera on there and the lack of a quick release makes using it a little bit of a hassle if you don’t want to walk around with it attached.

The other tripod that I should mention is the Joby Gorilla Pod. I only have one experience with one of these and it broke soooooo, personally I would go with the Pedco Ultrapod II.

Cheers,
